Miguel Cabrera and Gregory Soto of the Detroit Tigers are on the winning side of the MLB All-Star Game.

On Tuesday at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Detroit Tigers designated hitter Miguel Cabrera and left-handed reliever Gregory Soto represented the American League in the 2022 All-Star Game.

Cabrera, 39, was named to his 12th All-Star Game, this time as a "All-Star Legends Selection" with St. Louis Cardinals legend Albert Pujols, by commissioner Rob Manfred.

Soto, 27, was named to his second straight All-Star team in his second year as the Tigers' closer and fourth MLB season.

Cabrera came in as a pinch-hitter for Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Angels) in the fifth inning and took over as the AL's designated hitter. Cabrera, facing Cincinnati Reds right-hander Luis Castillo, grounded out to shortstop on the second pitch for the first out.

Cabrera had just one plate appearance. In the seventh inning, ex-Tiger J.D. Martinez (Boston Red Sox) pinch-hit for Cabrera and struck out on three pitches against right-hander Devin Williams (Milwaukee Brewers).

Soto came in with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to face Ian Happ (Chicago Cubs), who had retired the first two hitters of the inning. Soto led Happ 0-2 before throwing four consecutive balls for a walk.

Putting Happ on first sent Juan Soto (Washington Nationals) to the plate, who had won the Home Run Derby in 2022. With his first pitch against the Nationals' Soto, the Tigers' Soto threw the quickest pitch of his appearance, a 100.4 mph sinker.

To close the inning, he grounded into a force out.

The AL held on for a 3-2 win, its ninth straight All-Star Game victory. All three AL runs were scored in the fourth inning, thanks to a two-run home run from All-Star Game MVP Giancarlo Stanton (New York Yankees) and a solo homer from Byron Buxton (Minnesota Twins).

Soto made the AL's All-Star team by posting a 2.59 ERA with 15 walks and 32 strikeouts over 31⅓ innings in 33 games this season. He has converted 18 of 20 save chances in 2022 and 36 of 39 chances across the past two seasons.

Although Cabrera was a special selection, he has been one of the best players for the offensively inept Tigers this season, batting .287 with eight doubles, three home runs, 16 walks and 74 strikeouts in 79 games.

Prior to 2022, Cabrera made the All-Star Game in four straight seasons with the Florida Marlins (2004-07) and seven straight seasons with the Tigers (2010-16). His contract expires after the 2023 campaign.

The AL won 3-2, their seventh consecutive All-Star Game triumph. All three AL scores came in the fourth inning, courtesy to a two-run home run by All-Star Game MVP Giancarlo Stanton (New York Yankees) and a single homer by Byron Buxton (Arizona Diamondbacks) (Minnesota Twins).

Soto was named to the AL All-Star squad after compiling a 2.59 ERA, 15 walks, and 32 strikeouts in 3113 innings in 33 games this season. He has converted 18 of 20 save opportunities in 2022 and 36 of 39 chances in the previous two seasons.

Cabrera was a late-round pick, but he has been one of the Tigers' finest players this season, batting.287 with eight doubles, three home runs, 16 walks, and 74 strikeouts in 79 games.

Prior to 2022, Cabrera was an All-Star in four consecutive seasons with the Florida Marlins (2004-07) and seven consecutive seasons with the Tigers (2010-16). His contract will expire at the end of the 2023 season.
