Colorado Rockies game no. 70 thread: Kyle Freeland vs. Braxton Garrett

The good news is that Sandy Alcantara does not throw in this series versus the Rockies.

The bad news: a Miami sweep is still on the table.

In the first two games of this three-game series in Miami, the Marlins have outscored the Rockies 16-12. The Rockies are in a similar situation to last week after sweeping San Diego in three games over the weekend; they are hoping to save a series with one victory on Thursday.

Five days after a start in which he equaled a season-high seven innings, Kyle Freeland will take the mound for the Rockies. In that start, he only threw 82 pitches but gave up four runs to the Padres while getting no strikeouts. Freeland hasn't thrown 100 pitches in each of his three starts so far in June, but his six strikeouts in 20 innings this month are a sharp contrast to his 25 strikeouts in May in 33 2⁄3 frames.

Additionally, in two straight starts, Freeland has thrown more fastballs than sliders, a first for 2022:

Perhaps this contributed to his lack of strikeouts in June, and perhaps today afternoon at sea level we'll see more breaking balls. The combined strikeout rate for Miami's batters is 24.5 percent, which ranks sixth in MLB.

In his 13th MLB start overall, Braxton Garrett will throw the first inning's home half. Garrett, who was taken in the seventh overall pick in the 2017 draught, uses a variety of five pitches, including sliders, fastballs, sinkers, curveballs, and changeups. No pitch has been utilised more than 35% of the time*, and this is the first season in which he throws more sliders than heaters. Because none of his pitches are used more than 30% when Garrett is behind in the count, he can be unexpected.

Despite having comparable characteristics, Garrett's fastballs and sinkers differ significantly from one another due to the variance between the observed and spin-based axes.

His fastball averages 91.5 MPH this year, so he won't blow anyone away with velocity, but a varied pitch mix in all counts will keep batters off balance. This is his mix when he's behind in the count, using no pitches more than 30% of the time.

For the final game of this series, Colorado's bullpen is rested. Carlos Estévez last pitched on Sunday, while closer Daniel Bard hasn't pitched since Saturday. In a defeat on Tuesday, Alex Colomé threw 24 pitches; on Wednesday, Robert Stephenson and Lucas Gilbreath each only threw 11 pitches.

On Tuesday, Miami essentially used up all of its bullpen options; however, on Wednesday, many of its best pitchers were not utilised.

Also noteworthy is the fact that Sean Bouchard and Elehuris Montero are being used by Bud Black at positions eight and nine in the batting order. Both players have just been promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque.
